⛰ Clear Creek Mountain Life
Yes and finally!!!
CDOT tells the Clear Creek Mountain Life daily traffic closures at Floyd Hill on I-70 are coming to an end this summer.
We’ve been dealing with these often unpredictable blasting delays for up to 45 minutes for more than two years.
So many locals can tell you their stories about the time spent in traffic on I-70 at a dead stop or when they just rolled by as the last car before the interstate was shut down.
Meetings were missed, locals heading to doctor appointments down the hill were late, and we’ll never get the time back when we’ve been stuck in traffic.
A consensus of the locals the Courant spoke with say they are “cautiously optimistic,” with some saying “we’ll believe it when we see it.”
In addition, “how on earth” was there enough ice on Georgetown Lake to host the annual pond hockey tournament?
There was, and it was a blast for players, spectators and the local economy.
Thank you for reading this week’s Mountain Life, and please let us know what you want to read more of/less of in these newsletters.
We’re in this together, so let’s make this newsletter what it should be for our mountain locals!

I-70 closures to be ‘greatly reduced’ starting this summer

Work on I-70 at Floyd Hill
Colorado Department of Transportation leaders visit Idaho Springs for Floyd Hill construction update and reveal that daily closures are coming to an end soon.
It’s been more than two years since locals have been dealing with traffic closures from 20 to 45 minutes as CDOT blasts mountain rock to shape the future elevated interstate highway.

Pond hockey tournament returns to Georgetown Lake

Hundreds of players, friends and family traveling from across the country met for the annual hockey tournament.
Three-on-three hockey returned to Georgetown Lake, where there was surprisingly good ice despite recent warm temperatures.
Cabin Creek Brewing and the Clear Creek Metropolitan Recreation District teamed up again this year to bring the hockey event to Georgetown. There are no goalies or referees, and the tournament is played in a bracket-style format on one day.

What we’re working on right now:
Leaders in Idaho Springs, Georgetown, and Clear Creek County have been pressing the state for compensation due to reduced tourism revenue caused by construction delays on the ongoing I-70 Floyd Hill project.
A Resilience Economic Development Mixer at the Club Hotel in Idaho Springs attracts community and business leaders from the city, county and state, including Sen. Dylan Roberts, D-Colorado, of Clear Creek County.
The Courant pressed for a straight answer from Roberts, ‘will we see state funds to compensate for lost revenue?’
Final answer from Roberts is: “No.”
We’re diving into the details and will report our findings.
